Dont you find it odd that at different moments of the year you switch the time that you’re watch indicates you back and forward ? But do you know why we have to add and take off an hour on our favorite wristwatch twice a year?
The reason behind the seasonal clock switch is actually economical. The bi-annual time change would have for effect to save fuel consumption, as it is designed to result in a longer lasting day. In the 70's countries would start officialising this time travel, but each one of them at its own date. In 2001, the EU has set an obligation for all member states to make the time switch simultaneously, as the diverging schedules of each country was prone to create an organizational nightmare.
As a result of these measures the positive effects have been easily quantifiable: we are talking about an emission saving of 44,000 tonnes of CO2 less, this still represents the annual consumption of 800,000 households.
But on September 12 2018, The EU commission has proposed to end the seasonal time change throughout Europe, as this system has been questioned multiple times. Only 16% of the voters were in favor of continuing living with the bi-annual time switch. Yet the EU council hasn’t finalized its position on the matter it is believed to take action starting next year.
Meanwhile, on the night of Saturday to Sunday you will have to take off an hour on your timepiece in order to be on time.
